Most basements are dark, stuffy, and - if we're being honest - a little bit of a safety concern. No natural light, no real exit in an emergency. That's exactly the problem an egress window solves, and it's one of the more impactful upgrades you can make to a home.

Here's what we were working with: a below-grade basement wall that needed a properly sized opening, a window well, and a quality window unit to tie it all together. We used a Simonton window for this one. Simonton makes a solid, well-built product - clean frames, tight seals, and the kind of fit that holds up over time.

The window well itself is galvanized steel set into a gravel base for drainage. That detail matters more than people realize. Without proper drainage at the base of the well, you end up with water pooling right against the foundation. Gravel keeps water moving away from the structure, not sitting against it.

Getting an egress window right isn't just about cutting a hole and dropping in a unit. There are size requirements tied to local building codes - minimum opening dimensions that ensure a person can actually get out, or emergency responders can get in. We take that seriously on every install. Clean work from the opening cut all the way through to the finished frame is what separates a job done right from one that causes headaches later.

This is the kind of work that adds real value to a home - more usable basement space, better natural light, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing your lower level meets safety standards.
